The new owner of Rundle Mall’s City Cross shopping complex has unveiled plans to transform the centre with a $25m upgrade.

Footwear and fashion retailer Vans will set up a flagship store in the upgraded complex, while women’s fashion retailer Sheike will launch its first bricks-and-mortar outlet in Adelaide.

The project, led by Western Sydney property group Revelop, will be submitted for approval early next month, with construction expected to begin early next year.

It will deliver more than 500 jobs during construction.

Revelop paid property developer Con Makris $60m to take over the centre earlier this year, with a “clear vision to reinvent the entire visitor experience”, according to Revelop managing director Charbel Hazzouri.

“This is a location with enormous potential,” he said. “We will harness that to create a vibrant and modern landmark destination.

“Vans and Sheike will both join City Cross with flagship stores and Dumpling House, another new addition, will be the first of its kind in the CBD. These really set the bar for exciting new retail opportunities.”

As part of the new design, the centre’s facade at both the Rundle Mall and Grenfell St entry points will be replaced with a series of brick arches.

The interior will be transformed with open-plan spaces using terrazzo, natural brickwork and white oak timber.

Architect Paul Harrison, from Buchan, said the design had taken inspiration from precincts such as Pitt Street Mall in Sydney, Collins St in Melbourne, and fashion precincts across Europe.

“By thinking about the users – the city workers, the families, the weekenders – we designed a space to meet their needs, and to offer them a memorable experience at the centre of Rundle Mall,” he said.

The revamped centre will have space for more than 70 retail tenants, feature a boutique food hall and offer refurbished office space for 10 new tenants in the connected office component of the building.

Jeweller Archer & Holland will expand its store, while a mix of fashion, beauty, entertainment and service operators are being sought for the centre, which will also feature “high street and upscale eateries”.

They’ll join existing tenants including Harvey Norman and Chemist Warehouse.
